Tatton Park Space Mining Company

Austin Houldsworth & Louis Buckley

Developed as a project to both interrogate Biennial artworks and consider the applications for scientific endeavour in contemporary life, The Tatton Park Space Mining Company is a series of workshops with Year 7 pupils from five schools across Cheshire.

Taking their cue from Olivier Grossetête’s Pont de Singe, Houldsworth and Buckley are focussig pupils’ attention on the realities of reliance on a material that is in extremely short supply on Earth: helium. Appearing in character as representatives of the Company, the pair present welcome packs to their ‘trainee recruits’ working with each group over the course of a day to design, build and launch rockets and space mining equipment while discussing the ethics of mining the Moon for precious metals and helium.
